The ITA ensemble is working on six new productions, four of which are world premieres, and will be reprising more than 17 performances.

We will introduce Julien Gosselin from France, Michiel van Erp from the Netherlands and Simon McBurney from Britain as directors at the theatre company and welcome three new regular actors: Maarten Heijmans, Achraf Koutet and Majd Mardo.

Apart from 180 evenings at the Leidseplein and a tour around the Netherlands of Scenes from a Marriage, the ensemble will travel to Avignon and Saint Petersburg, Taipei, London, Singapore and Beijing, among other places.

Notable themes are trauma and catastrophe. Why are individual people and entire societies so strongly marked by it? How should we deal with these deep physical, psychological or emotional injuries?

A little life

Ivo van Hove kicks off the new season with the world premiere of bestseller A little life by Hanya Yanagihara. For Van Hove, it is the ultimate book about pure friendship, but also about the lifelong pain of systematic sexual abuse. The four friends are played by Ramsey Nasr, Maarten Heijmans, Majd Mardo and Mandela Wee Wee.

The performance premieres on 23 September. On 24 September, Hanya Yanagihara is a guest in our series An evening with, where Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal will interview her about her work.

The wood

Michiel van Erp, known from e.g. the award-winning series Ramses, will be making his debut in the main theatre with The wood by Jeroen Brouwers. Van Erp: ‘The wood is about the mechanisms behind the collective concealment of abuse. And about the dilemmas that individuals face when they want to do something about it, and about the courage that is required to step forward.’

The performance – with Gijs Scholten van Aschat, Aus Greidanus jr., Maria Kraakman, Thomas Cammaert, Achraf Koutet et al. – will have its world premiere on 4 November.

Falling man

With French director Julien Gosselin (Les Particules Élementaires and 2666), we will be adding one of the world’s greatest young directing talents to our theatre company. In his debut at ITA, Falling Man, he reflects on global terrorism and its effect on a family in New York during the aftermath of 9/11.

The performance is part of Gosselin’s great international Don DeLillo project, the first part of which will premiere at the Festival d’Avignon this summer. Part two, Falling Man with Eelco Smits, Hans Kesting, Maria Kraakman et al., will have its world premiere in March. ITA is the only place in the world where both parts will be performed.

The cherry orchard

Internationally renowned British director Simon McBurney – whose The Encounter and Dog’s Heart were performed last year at the Holland Festival and the Dutch national Opera respectively – has chosen Chekhov’s The cherry orchard as his ITA directing debut with Gijs Scholten van Aschat, Chris Nietvelt, Hélène Devos, Steven Van Watermeulen et al.

By now, The cherry orchard is one of the most beloved plays of the  global repertoire and will premiere during the Holland Festival 2019.

Death in Venice

Death in Venice is a unique collaboration between ITA and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Ivo van Hove directs Thomas Mann’s novella, adapted by Ramsey Nasr. Nico Muhly composes new music. This young shooting star of American music worked together with artists like Björk, Antony and the Johnsons and Usher, composed operas and wrote film scores.

This musical theatre production will have its world premiere on 4 April 2019 and will be performed exclusively at Koninklijk Theater Carré. After that, the performance will go on an international tour to Paris and London, among other places.

A delicate balance

And at ITA-2, our platform for the development of directorial talent, Maren E. Bjørseth will be directing Hajo Bruins, Thomas Cammaert, Hélène Devos, Malou Gorter et al. in A delicate balance by Edward Albee, a coproduction together with Toneelschuur Producties. The voorstelling will premiere in March 2019 and will be performed exclusively in Haarlem.

Revivals

ITA will be reprising audience favourite Scenes from a marriage as a touring performance through the Netherlands. In Amsterdam, we will also be reprising The Fountainhead, La voix humaine, Small souls, The hidden force, Ibsen house, Oedipus, The year of cancer and Husbands and wives.

Kings of war will be introduced in Asia (Taipei and Singapore) and The things that pass will be performed in Saint Petersburg. The other voice, La voix humaine and The hidden force will travel to Paris. Medea will be performed in Madrid and  London.
